Bang Hai Ja was a Korean abstract artist celebrated for her meditative explorations of light, space, and cosmic energy. Moving to Paris in 1961, she initially experimented with art informel, later forging a unique aesthetic between Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction. A key turning point came during her return to Korea(1968–1976) when she discovered Dakji in 1971. This sparked a lifelong engagement with traditional Korean materials and culture, which she used across painting, murals, printmaking, and stained glass.

Throughout her career, Bang expanded her material palette to include natural pigments, French ocher earth, and geotextiles. Combining meditation and qigong with her artistic practice, she worked horizontally on the floor and used techniques like baechaebeop to let light permeate her surfaces. Her lifelong pursuit culminated in expansive post-2000s works that projected deep cosmic depth and radiant inner luminosity.
