B. 1918 in Jinju, Korea
Seundja Rhee, departed Korea for Paris in 1951, began her studies of formative arts and continued to be active in Western painting and woodblock printing all the way into her nineties. By applying Koreaness to her artworks, she caught the eye of the Paris art world and later, taking to world art stage with her broad exhibition itinerary, cemented her position as Korea's representative modern artist. In a period slightly longer than a half-century, she created roughly 4,000 works, carried out some 85 solo exhibitions, and participated in more than 300 group exhibitions. Rhee's cooperative work with giant in the Nouveau Roman milieux, Michel Butor(1926- ), attempted a marriage of the formative arts and literature, while the oeuvre of work she leaves behind transcends time and demonstrates her creative power that exceed painting as it encompasses works in an array of artistic realms inculding work in pottery, tapestry, mosaic and collections of poerty.
