Puchercos brings a unique background to his art, having built his career as an engineer rather than a traditional photographer. Born to a civil engineering expert, he dedicated much of his professional life to the building materials industry. This experience subtly informs his photographic practice, revealing a distinctive formal sensibility toward structure, order, and urban space.
After spending five years in Kenya, he worked for seven years in Korea, followed by another seven years in Lagos, Nigeria, before returning to Seoul, where he continues to live and work. Whenever he arrives in an unfamiliar country, he makes a point of learning its language as a first step toward understanding its culture. This approach reflects his photographic practice, which seeks to move beyond superficial observation and engage more deeply with his surroundings.
For Puchercos, photography is an act of quietly approaching the society and nature surrounding him to resonate with their subtle rhythms. This approach manifests across his body of work in restrained compositions and static planes. Through this very silence, his enduring affection for the spirit of Korea emerges with clarity. Rather than chasing dramatic moments or staged setups, he captures the understated scenes often overlooked by the city: crimson autumn leaves, silhouettes etched in shadow, and fleeting encounters with strangers on mountain peaks. His lens frames a diverse cityscape: vibrant media facades along Cheonggyecheon, the traditional Lotus Lantern Festival, bridges spanning the Han River, the illuminated night of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and winter squares steeped in Korea's turbulent modern history. Through his gaze, Seoul’s landscapes are reinterpreted as dynamic spaces where different eras and meanings intersect.
French cultural director Sylvie Bonnet describes Puchercos not as a photographer rushing to capture a fleeting moment, but as an observer who waits in quiet contemplation.
"To observe, to understand, to communicate. To convey his sensations, to bear witness in his own way. His photographs are moments gathered and frozen as if during a slow walk - spontaneous, sensitive, simple. Singular shots, like the gaze cast on the fragile beauty of reddening leaves, the contingency of trees, the intensity of silhouettes in shadow, or that still choreography of strangers brought together by chance at a mountain’s summit, seeming—just for a moment— to form a society."
This exhibition invites visitors into the Korea that has inspired Puchercos through a “map of the gaze” shaped by a life traced through construction, language, observation, and movement.
