Hur Kyung-Ae was born in 1977 in Gwangju, South Korea, and currently lives and works in France. In France, she gained a wider scope of artistic creation. She experimented with various media, but eventually her preference for painting prevailed. She returned to it with newfound inspiration: by scratching the pictorial surface of one of her canvases with a sharp blade, she discovered a new vision and sense of wellbeing. This process, which she describes as “awakening”, is both meditative and aggressive, and draws a lot of attention to her work today. She is linked to the younger generation of the ‘Dansaekhwa’ movement and is earning increasing international acclaim.
